POLLY TISDALL
ABOUT
Polly’s directing practice is people-centred. She is fascinated by the handmade, the sprawling and the spontaneous. She loves epic stories made pocket-sized and seemingly small stories made magnificent. She is interested in connection, clarity and working with what each person brings to the room. She is determined in working towards a kinder, more ethical and more inclusive theatre.
Polly began writing and directing adaptations of traditional folk tales in 2008 while studying for her degree in English Literature and Drama at the University of Birmingham.
Since then she has directed work for the Edinburgh Fringe, The Spark Arts For Children, Telford Mind, mac Birmingham, Apples & Snakes, Birmingham Rep and Oxford Playhouse. She has also worked with a number of companies, including Ampersand, Swing Circus, Up The Ante and Desperate Men as a dramaturg and specialist facilitator: exploring narrative, community engagement and company identity.
Polly has assistant directed on a range of productions including Dear Father Christmas (dir. Helen Eastman) and Ready Steady Colour! (dir. Toby Hulse).
From 2014-15 she was Resident Director at Oxford Playhouse and Magdalen College School, directing numerous productions with young people aged 11-18.
Supported by RCS Innovation Studio, Polly is currently working on the script for a new production, based on an ancient story. Read more about Icarus in Bristol.
